How memory works on Lerk AI

Every conversation on Lerk AI keeps its own long-term memory, so a companion can bring back what you shared earlier and pick up where you left off. Here is what that memory covers, how far back each plan reaches, and how to start over when you want a clean slate.

What does an AI companion “remember”?

The AI behind a companion doesn't remember anything by itself. Each reply is written from what the app gives it to work with: the character's personality, the latest messages, and whatever the app has kept from earlier in your conversation. “Memory” in an AI companion app is that last part, the app's way of holding on to what matters and bringing it back at the right moment.

That is why memory is the difference between a companion who feels like a stranger every time and one who asks how the interview went. If you want the bigger picture of how AI companions work, our guide to what an AI girlfriend is covers it in plain words.

Memory on Lerk AI: one memory per conversation

On Lerk AI, each conversation has its own long-term memory. Within it, the companion keeps track of what is happening between you, brings back details you shared earlier, adapts to the way you text and takes the lead now and then, while staying true to their own personality.

In practice, that means a companion can:

  • Pick up a thread from an earlier session without you repeating it
  • Refer back to things you mentioned about your day, your plans or what you like
  • Match your style over time, whether you write short messages or long ones
  • Start a topic of their own instead of only reacting to yours

Memory works the same way in both chat modes. A Texting conversation and a Roleplay conversation each keep their own, and the mode you pick is fixed for that conversation, as how Texting and Roleplay work explains.

How far back it recalls on Free, VIP and Lerker

Every account gets long-term memory. What changes with your plan is how far back a companion can reach. A free account recalls the recent past, while the VIP and Lerker plans reach much further back. The store describes the difference in its own words, which we quote rather than translate into numbers of our own:

Memory by plan
PlanMemory recall (store wording)Companions may message first
FreeThe recent pastNo
VIP“4x Memory Recall (Vs Free)”Yes
Lerker“6x Memory Recall (Vs Free)”Yes
Recall wording as listed on the plan cards in the store on Lerk.ai.

If memory matters to you, this is one of the clearest reasons to consider a plan. Long-running conversations are where the difference shows: a companion on a paid plan can bring back something from much earlier in your chats. Lerk AI's plans and prices lists everything else each plan adds.

How the relationship develops

Alongside memory, each relationship moves through stages as you keep talking: from getting to know each other, to getting closer, to very close. The stage reflects how well the two of you know each other, and it only moves forward. A quiet week doesn't send you back to the start, and neither does restarting the chat.

You won't see a score or a meter. The stages simply reflect that you have been talking for a while, the way a conversation with someone new changes as you get to know them.

When a companion messages you first

On the VIP and Lerker plans, a companion you have been talking to may message you first after you've been away for a while. It is one of the ways a companion takes the lead, rather than only ever answering you.

On a free account, the conversation waits for you. Everything you have talked about is still there when you come back.

Restarting or deleting a chat

The menu in a chat's header has two options that are easy to mix up, so here is the difference:

  • Restart keeps the companion and begins a fresh conversation. They won't remember what you've talked about so far, which is useful when a story has run its course or you want to begin differently. Your relationship stage carries over.
  • Delete removes the conversation entirely.

Both ask you to confirm with a sentence that says exactly what will happen, so neither is a one-tap accident.

Memory and privacy

What a companion remembers lives in your conversation, and your conversations are private to your account. They are never published, Lerk AI doesn't sell them or use them to target ads, and you can delete chats whenever you like. Messages are checked for safety automatically, as everything on Lerk AI is.

What memory can't do

Long-term memory is useful, but it has limits worth knowing:

  • It belongs to one conversation. Telling one companion something doesn't tell the others, and a restart begins without it.
  • It has a reach. Even on Lerker, recall goes much further back than on a free account but is not unlimited.
  • It can get a detail wrong. Like any AI, a companion can occasionally misremember or mix something up. Correcting it in the chat is the simplest fix.
  • It is not a person remembering. Companions are AI characters. Their memory makes conversations feel continuous, but there is no one on the other side.

Getting the most from memory

  1. Set a nickname. Choose what companions call you in your profile, so it feels personal from the first message.
  2. Share the details you want brought back. A companion can only remember what came up, so mention the things you'd like them to ask about later.
  3. Keep a long story in one conversation. Memory builds up over time, so starting over often means starting from nothing each time.
  4. Restart on purpose. When you do want a clean slate, Restart is the tool for it.

Good to know

Memory and the mood setting are separate. You can switch between Flirty and Spicy mid-conversation without the companion losing track of anything.

Frequently asked questions

Does my AI girlfriend remember me?

On Lerk AI, yes, within your conversation with her. Each conversation has its own long-term memory, so she can bring back things you told her earlier and pick up where you left off, even days later. A free account recalls the recent past; the VIP and Lerker plans reach much further back. The same goes for AI boyfriends.

Does memory carry over between companions?

No. Memory belongs to one conversation, so a different companion starts without knowing what you told the first one. What every companion does know is your nickname, if you set one, because it is part of your account. Texting and Roleplay explains how each new chat begins.

How do I make a companion forget?

Use Restart in the chat's menu. It begins a fresh conversation with the same companion, and they won't remember what you talked about before. If you'd rather remove the conversation altogether, choose Delete instead. Both ask you to confirm first.
