Lerk AI alternatives: who it suits, and when to look elsewhere
Written by the makers of Lerk AI
This page is published by Lerk Studios, the company behind Lerk AI. It doesn't name, price or score any other app. Where we describe other kinds of apps, we keep to general statements you can check for yourself.
Why we don't rank other apps
Search for alternatives to almost any app and you'll find ranked lists, scores and “top picks”. We aren't going to add another one. A ranking from us could never be a fair one: we know Lerk AI inside out and other apps only from the outside, and we have an obvious reason to put ourselves first. A list built on that would tell you more about us than about the apps.
So this page does something narrower that we think is more useful. It sets out what Lerk AI is built for, where it deliberately stops, and the broad kinds of apps people weigh it against. Then it gives you the questions worth putting to any app you're considering, Lerk AI included. If you want the long version, our guide to choosing an AI companion app works through twelve points in detail.
Who Lerk AI suits, and who it doesn't
Lerk AI is a companion website for adults 18 and over. It is built around one thing: ongoing conversations with fictional AI characters, plus photos and short videos of them. Here is our view, as its makers, of who that suits and who it doesn't.
Lerk AI suits you if…
- You want ongoing conversations with a character who remembers: every conversation keeps its own long-term memory.
- You like choosing how a chat feels: Texting, where a companion messages you from their own life, or Roleplay, where you share a scene.
- You'd enjoy designing a companion yourself, realistic or anime, a woman or a man, in a six-step creator.
- You want photos and short videos of your companion, asked for in chat or made in a studio.
- You'd rather use a website than install anything: it runs in the browser on desktop and mobile.
- You want to chat in English, Spanish, French, German or Japanese.
It may not suit you if…
- You want spoken conversation or calls: chats on Lerk AI are text-based.
- You want something to install from an app store: Lerk AI is a website.
- You want a fully free tier with no message limit: free accounts get a limited number of messages every 24 hours, and photos and videos cost stars.
- You want to upload your own photos, or make images of anyone who exists: Lerk AI doesn't accept uploads.
- You need a language other than English, Spanish, French, German or Japanese.
- You want a general-purpose assistant for work, study or research rather than a companion.

When another kind of app fits better
Every point in the second list above is a deliberate limit, not an oversight we're hiding. If one of them is the thing you care about most, you'll be happier with a different kind of app, and that's fine.
If you want to talk out loud
Lerk AI is text only: there are no calls and no spoken replies. Some people love the pace of texting, and Lerk AI's Texting mode is built around it. But if hearing a companion matters to you, look for an app designed around calls from the start, rather than one where it was added later.
If you want an app from an app store
Lerk AI runs in your browser on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install, and your conversations sync between devices when you sign in. If you specifically want an app you install from an app store, Lerk AI isn't one.
If you want to use it entirely free
Signing up and browsing cost nothing, and a free account includes a limited number of messages every 24 hours. Unlimited messages come with the paid VIP and Lerker plans, and photos, videos and creating a character are paid for with stars. If you only ever want to use a companion app for free, with no cap, Lerk AI isn't built that way. Our Lerk AI pricing guide shows exactly what is free and what isn't.
If you want to work with your own photos
Lerk AI doesn't accept uploads. Every companion is a fictional adult, never based on anyone who exists, and every image is generated from that character. If you want to edit pictures of yourself, a photo editor is the right tool. And treat any app that offers to turn a photo of someone else into companion images with caution: making images of a person without their agreement can do them real harm.
If you need another language
Lerk AI is available in English, Spanish, French, German and Japanese. If you'd rather chat in a language that isn't on that list, an app that supports it will feel far more natural.
If you want an assistant, not a companion
Lerk AI's companions are characters with a personality and a story, made for conversation and roleplay. They aren't built to draft your emails, explain a topic for an exam or research a decision. For that, a general AI assistant is the better fit.
Kinds of apps people compare it with
When people look for alternatives to Lerk AI, they usually end up comparing four broad kinds of apps. These descriptions are deliberately general: each category has a wide range of products in it, and individual apps differ.
General AI chat assistants
Built for questions, writing and work. They hold a good conversation, but they aren't designed around a single character, an ongoing relationship or long-running roleplay.Wellbeing-focused companion apps
Companions built around check-ins, reflection and talking things through. The emphasis is usually on support and routine rather than romance or roleplay.Story and roleplay platforms
Places to write interactive stories, often with many characters made by other users. More variety in scenarios, usually with less focus on one companion who knows you.AI image generators
Tools for making pictures from a written prompt. Plenty of creative control over the image, but no conversation and no character who carries on from one day to the next.
Lerk AI overlaps with several of these without being any of them: it is a companion chat first, with a character who keeps a memory of your conversation, and photos and videos of that character second. If the first thing you want isn't a conversation with a companion, one of the other categories is probably closer to what you're after.
Questions to ask any alternative
Whichever apps you shortlist, the same handful of questions will tell you most of what you need to know. Here they are, with how Lerk AI answers each one, so you have something to compare against.
- Does it remember earlier conversations, and how far back? On Lerk AI each conversation keeps its own long-term memory, and the paid plans recall much further back than a free account.
- What does the free account really include? Lerk AI's includes browsing, a limited number of messages every 24 hours, and a one-time gift of welcome stars once you verify your email.
- How are photos and videos priced? On Lerk AI they cost stars, you see the price before you send a request, and a generation that fails or is blocked by a safety check refunds its stars.
- What appears on your bank statement? Lerk AI charges show as “Lerk Studios” and never describe what you bought.
- Can you cancel online, and do credits expire? Lerk AI subscriptions can be cancelled anytime in the app. Purchased stars don't expire; the monthly allowance doesn't roll over.
- Is your data sold or used for ads, and can you delete it? Lerk AI doesn't sell conversations or use them to target ads, and you can delete chats, characters and media whenever you like. Is Lerk AI safe? covers privacy and billing in full.
- Who runs it, and how do you reach them? Lerk AI is run by Lerk Studios, Inc., at support@lerk.ai, with its policies published in Lerk AI's Help and Legal pages.
Trying Lerk AI before you decide
The surest way to know whether an app suits you is to use it for a few days. Signing up for Lerk AI and browsing the companions are free, so you can open a couple of profiles, start a chat in each mode and see how the memory holds up before you spend anything.

Frequently asked questions
What are some alternatives to Lerk AI?
It depends on what you want that Lerk AI doesn't do. For spoken conversation, look for an app built around calls; for help with work or study, a general AI assistant; for check-ins and talking things through, a wellbeing-focused companion app; for stories with many characters, a roleplay platform; and for artwork on its own, an image generator. We don't name or rank specific apps, because we make Lerk AI. Our 12-point checklist works for comparing any of them.
Is Lerk AI better than other AI girlfriend apps?
We can't answer that fairly: we build Lerk AI, so any verdict from us would be the maker's. What we can tell you is what it does well (long-term memory in every conversation, two chat modes, a companion creator, photos and videos) and where it stops (text only, browser only, and a daily message limit on free accounts). Weigh those against what matters to you, or try the free account. Our Lerk AI review lists the downsides as well as the strengths.
Can I use Lerk AI alongside other apps?
Yes. Nothing about Lerk AI asks you to use it on its own, and because it runs in your browser there is nothing to install next to the apps you already have. Your chats, characters and media stay private to your Lerk AI account wherever else you spend your time.
