What is an AI boyfriend?

An AI boyfriend is the same idea as an AI girlfriend, with a man in the role. He is a fictional character, powered by an AI language model, with his own looks, personality and backstory. You talk to him by text, he answers in character, and the app keeps track of your conversation so it can build over time rather than starting fresh every message.

He isn't a person, and nobody is typing on the other side. That's worth saying clearly, because a well-written AI boyfriend can feel attentive and consistent enough to blur the line. If you'd like the full picture of how the technology works, what it remembers and what it can't do, our guide to what an AI girlfriend is covers it, and all of it applies to AI boyfriends too.

Why people choose an AI boyfriend

The reasons are as varied as the people, and most are simple. Some want a little romance and attention at the end of the day, on their own schedule. Some enjoy the back-and-forth of flirting by text, with nothing riding on it. Writers and roleplayers often like having a character who stays consistent across a long story. And plenty are just curious about what today's AI can do.

Whatever brings you, it helps to know what you want before you start: a sweet, steady presence, a confident flirt, or a partner in a story. That one decision makes it much easier to pick the right companion, and to enjoy him for what he is. If you're weighing whether it's for you at all, our honest look at whether an AI companion is worth it applies to AI boyfriends just as much.

How chatting with an AI boyfriend works

Every app does this a little differently. On Lerk AI, a conversation has a few settings that shape how it feels:

  • The mode, chosen when the chat starts. In Texting, he's out living his life and messages you the way someone you're seeing would, with no narration. In Roleplay, you're in the scene together and he describes what he does as well as what he says. The mode stays the same for that conversation; to try the other, you start a new chat.
  • The mood, which you can change at any time. Flirty keeps things warm, playful and romantic. Spicy is bolder and more direct.
  • An optional opening scenario to set the scene before your first message, or you can simply say hello.
  • Memory. Each conversation keeps its own long-term memory, so he can bring back details from earlier. The VIP and Lerker plans recall much further back than a free account, and on those plans he may message you first after you've been away for a while.

Our page on Texting, Roleplay and mood goes deeper into each setting.

Personalities you'll find

Looks are the first thing you notice, but personality is what you'll be talking to. On Lerk AI, some companions are shy and sweet, some playful or confident, some caring or a little mysterious, and each has a look, a personality and a way of texting that fit who he is.

Personality changes the shape of a chat more than people expect. A confident companion tends to take the lead, suggest plans and tease. A shyer one leaves more room for you to ask questions and draw him out. A caring one is more likely to ask how your day went and remember the answer. None of these is better than the others; it's worth trying two or three very different characters before deciding what you enjoy.

Realistic or anime?

AI boyfriends come in two visual styles. Realistic companions look photographic, so their photos read like pictures from someone's phone. Anime companions are drawn in an illustrated style, which many people find more expressive and a better match for fantasy or playful stories. The style changes how he looks in photos and videos; it doesn't decide how he chats.

Finding an AI boyfriend on Lerk AI

The quickest way in is Explore on Lerk.ai, the full catalog of ready-made companions.

  1. Set the Gender filter to Male. Add the Style filter (Realistic or Anime) or an age range if you like.
  2. Tap a companion to read his profile and get a feel for his personality.
  3. Save the ones you like to your Favorites so they're easy to find again.
  4. Start a chat, choose Texting or Roleplay, and send your first message.

The more companions you open, the more Explore leans toward your type, so a few minutes of browsing makes the list more useful. Every companion on Lerk AI is a fictional adult, and none is based on anyone who exists.

Creating your own AI boyfriend

If none of the ready-made companions is quite right, you can design one. Lerk AI's creator takes you through six steps: style (photoreal or anime), appearance, hair, body, personality (his name, age, temperament, occupation, how you know each other and what he's into) and a final summary. Lerk AI then makes his first portrait and he's ready to chat.

Creating a character uses stars, and he stays private to your account: nobody else can see him or chat with him. Creating your own AI companion on Lerk AI walks through each step and what it costs today. To start with the style already chosen:

Getting more out of the conversation

A few habits make a big difference to how good an AI boyfriend is to talk to:

  • Give him something to work with. “Hey” gets a polite answer; “I just got back from a terrible meeting, distract me” gets a conversation.
  • Tell him what you like. If he's too formal, too fast or not flirty enough, say so. Companions adapt to the way you text.
  • Use a scenario when you want a story. In Roleplay, an opening scenario gives you both a place and a reason to be there.
  • Restart when a chat has run its course. Restarting begins a fresh conversation with no memory of the old one (your relationship stage stays), which is the cleanest way to try a different dynamic with the same companion.

Privacy and safety basics

Before you share anything personal with an AI boyfriend, on any app, it's worth knowing where it goes. On Lerk AI, your chats, characters and media are private to your account and never published. Lerk AI doesn't sell conversations or use them to target ads, and you can delete chats, characters and media whenever you like. Card charges show as “Lerk Studios” and never describe what you bought.

Lerk AI is for adults 18 and over, every companion is an adult AI character, and the same safety rules apply in every chat mode and on every plan. Our full answer to is Lerk AI safe? covers privacy, payments and content rules in detail.
