Anime vs realistic AI companions

Realistic companions look photographic; anime companions are drawn in an illustrated style. The style shapes how a companion looks in photos and videos, while personality shapes how they chat. Here is how to pick, and how to try or create either on Lerk AI.

The difference at a glance

Most companion apps offer some version of these two styles. The short version: pick the look you'll enjoy seeing, then pick the personality you'll enjoy talking to, because those are separate choices.

Neither style is the “proper” one. Plenty of people switch between them depending on their mood, and on Lerk AI there's nothing stopping you having conversations going with both.

Why people choose anime

Anime and manga have a huge following, and for many people an anime companion simply looks like the kind of character they already love. Beyond that, a few reasons come up again and again:

  • It's expressive. Illustrated faces exaggerate emotion in a way photographs don't, so a smile, a pout or a raised eyebrow reads instantly.
  • It feels clearly fictional. Some people prefer the distance: an illustrated character never looks like someone you might know.
  • It suits fantasy. Stories with magic, other worlds or larger-than-life settings tend to sit more naturally in an illustrated style.
  • It avoids the “almost real” feeling. Photoreal images occasionally land just short of real, which some people find off-putting. Illustration sidesteps that.

Why people choose realistic

Realistic companions win on a different kind of appeal:

  • Immersion. A photoreal companion makes texting feel more like messaging someone from your own life, which is exactly what a texting-style chat is going for.
  • Photos that look like photos. Pictures of a realistic companion read like snapshots from a phone rather than artwork.
  • Everyday scenes. A coffee date, a walk, a lazy Sunday: ordinary settings often feel more natural in a photoreal style.

Whatever the look, a realistic companion is still a fictional AI character. On Lerk AI none is based on anyone who exists, and every image is generated by AI.

Does the style change how they chat?

Not directly. The art style is visual; the conversation comes from the companion's personality, backstory and the chat settings you choose. The same AI writes the replies either way, reading the same kind of character profile. A confident, teasing anime companion and a confident, teasing realistic one will text in much the same way. On Lerk AI's creator, style is the first of six steps and personality is the fifth, and neither one decides the other.

What does change how a chat feels is the mode. In Texting, a companion messages you from their own life with no narration; in Roleplay, you share a scene and they describe what they do. Either style works with either mode. How chats work on Lerk AI explains the difference, and our guide to what an AI girlfriend is covers how personality and memory fit together.

Photos and videos in each style

This is where style matters most. Photos and videos of a companion are generated in that companion's style, so an anime companion's pictures are illustrations and a realistic companion's are photoreal. On Lerk AI you can ask for a photo in chat (you see the price in stars before you send) or use the studio for photos from presets or your own prompt, and turn a saved photo into a short video with generated sound.

If pictures are a big part of why you're here, it's worth looking at a few companions in each style before you settle. Photos and videos on Lerk AI covers what each costs, and our general guide to how AI companion photos and videos are made explains what to expect from either style.

How to decide

If you're still unsure, four quick questions usually settle it:

  • Which would you rather look at every day? Pictures are the one place the style always shows, so go with the look you'll enjoy seeing in your chats and your gallery.
  • Where do your stories happen? If you picture coffee dates, work gossip and weekend plans, realistic tends to fit. If you picture castles, starships or a festival in another world, anime often sits more comfortably.
  • Do you want someone you could meet, or clearly a character? Realistic leans toward the first, anime toward the second. Neither is more “real”: both are fictional AI characters.
  • How much do photos matter to you? If they're a small part of the experience, choose on personality alone and let the style follow.

And remember the choice isn't permanent. You can chat with companions in both styles at the same time, and nothing about one conversation carries into another.

Trying both on Lerk AI

The simplest way to decide is to try one of each. On Explore, set the Style filter to Realistic, open a companion whose profile you like and start a chat. Then switch the filter to Anime and do the same. Every conversation keeps its own memory, so the two never get mixed up, and you can save both to your Favorites.

Every companion on Lerk AI, in both styles, is an adult character with an age of 18 or over, and the same safety rules apply to both.

Creating a companion in either style

If you know what you want, you can design a companion yourself. Lerk AI's creator takes you through six steps: style, appearance, hair, body, personality and a final summary, then makes their first portrait. Creating a character uses stars, and your creation is private to your account. Each link below opens the creator with the style and gender already chosen:

Frequently asked questions

Do anime companions chat differently from realistic ones?

Not because of the art style. How a companion chats comes from their personality, backstory and the mode you pick, not from how they're drawn, so a shy anime companion and a shy realistic one will both be shy. The style mostly changes how they look in photos and videos.

Are anime AI companions adults?

On Lerk AI, yes: every companion is an adult character, 18 or over, in both styles, and content involving minors is never allowed. The same rules apply whatever the art style. Other apps set their own rules, so check their age policy before you use them.

Can I try both styles on Lerk AI?

Yes. On Explore you can switch the Style filter between Realistic and Anime, open a companion in each and start a chat with both. Each conversation keeps its own memory, so trying one doesn't affect the other.
